Why is Mental Health important? – Joyce Godswill

Oftentimes, we tend to overlook the importance of our mental health without knowing it is as important as our physical health.

Our mental health is the force or engine that enables us to be productive. The importance of mental health cannot be overemphasized because the structure of a healthy being begins with a healthy mind.

Did you know that if there are 5 million people in the world, 90% are suffering from mental disorders? So, this is why the need to create awareness on mental health is very important.

Mental health isn’t just important for adults but also for adolescents and children alike. The developmental stage of a child is very important because they can develop mental disorders from traumas and environments. This is why parents, teachers and the society should always stay informed on the importance of mental health.

Mental health is a friend of all and we should all embrace it as a friend not a foe because the overall well-being of your emotional  and physical well-being is dependent on your mental health.

Stress is part of human life and your ability to cope with stress and still stay productive is as a result of good mental health.

This brings us to another question.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which an individual realizes their abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and can contribute to their community.

Your ability to make the right decisions, engage in meaningful conversations, and contribute to the growth of a community or organization you find yourself in is as a result of your mental health – that is how important our mental health is. This is not in any way to say that your physical health isn’t important, but to show you that both are intertwined.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗡𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝘀 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁:

1. 𝗧𝗼 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:

Before you utter any word, it first comes to your mind. However, without a healthy mental state of mind, you won’t be able to think and engage in meaningful conversations. A good mental health is a tool to bring innovative and effective communication that will bring problem solving ideas and strengthen relationships. But, if the mental state isn’t in a good shape, making meaningful conversations will be an impossible task.

2. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆:

That you are able to work in an organization and be productive is by the help of your mental well-being. Your ability to be a problem-solver, a creative thinker, concentrate, and also make great decisions is influenced by a positive mental state. It helps us to handle stress effectively, be innovative, and lead great performance at work.

3. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲:

When your mental state is stable, it helps in building meaningful relationships and creating long-lasting bonds with people. Nobody would like to work with someone who is mentally unstable. Nurturing and being in a healthy relationship is because your mental well-being is safe.

4. 𝗧𝗼 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲:

Your mental health pilots your overall well-being, including how you live your life. People with positive mental health tend to live a happier and fulfilled life. While people with mental disorders find it hard to live in joy, contentment, or find fulfillment in life. So, it is safe to say that your mental health is an engine that leads your life.

5. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲:

Mental health and physical health are intertwined, which means they’re inseparable. One can’t function without a healthy mind, and one can’t function without a healthy body.

Your mental health enables you to pursue your purpose, enjoy your hobbies, and find fulfillment in life. If your mental health is in good shape, leading a fulfilled life is easy.

6. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴:

A good mental health gives you the ability to keep your emotions in check and handle conflicts in a calm manner. Inability to manage your emotions effectively is a mental disorder but the awareness of mental health will help you tame your emotions.

7. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁:

Do you know having a good mental state of mind improves your quality of sleep? The inability to sleep or rest is caused by mental disorders like depression, anxiety, etc. And will in turn affect your productivity and overall well-being that is why having good mental health is very important.

8. 𝗜𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗺𝗮:

Having a conversation around mental health will help reduce the stigmas and misconceptions surrounding it and help people become more audacious in seeking help when they start seeing the signs of mental disorders. So, this is why mental health is important – it brings you to the awareness of mental disorders and the impact it has on an individual or community.

9. 𝗧𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀:

The World Health  Organization (WHO) states that one of the importance of mental health is to prevent mental health disorders. If you have a knowledge on mental health it will help you prevent mental health disorders from happening to you or your loved one. It will also help you gain more knowledge on how to handle people suffering from mental disorders.

𝗜𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻,

Knowing the importance of your mental health will help you lead a fulfilled life.

Mental health is a state that influences your emotional well-being, productive life, ability to create healthy relationships and enjoy a quality life.

It is a very important aspect of our life that should never be overlooked and it can never be overemphasized. Mental health isn’t just a word to say you’re free from mental disorders but to tell you that you can lead the life you desire with a healthy mind.

There are a lot of misconceptions around about mental health which has made a lot of people shy away from this subject matter. That is why knowing the importance of mental health will help you rise above the fear and stigmas surrounding mental health.
