The Scarlet Letter Of Education – Akanni Gloria Funmilayo

Talking about education in our society. “As many philosophers have said, education is the foundation on which our future is built.

Come to think of it, the highest reaches of education are like the summit of a mountain. It takes great effort to get there, but the view from the top is worth all the hard work”.

” Education is like a mountain, the further we climb, the more we learn. Thinkers of old time like our philosophers” Plato and Aristotle who have studied the history of education and its importance in our society at large, “education has become a vital part of our society because it has its significant impact on our modern world because of its numerous benefit”.

Let’s explore the concept, ” The Scarlet letter of education. This emphasizes on the complexities, and the challenges that most we Nigerian students face, from societal expectations to our educational policies. Let’s  examine some of those complexities that are associated with education.

1. The pressure of performance:

In today’s demanding society, the pressure to achieve academic excellence has become a scarlet letter for both we the students and the educators . What do I mean by the scarlet letter of education in this context? The phrase “Scarlet letter of education” suggests that education is a lifelong process of learning and growth, with both positive and negative aspects. It emphasizes on being open to new experiences as well as the potential for mistakes and failure along the way.

In an educational sector where students are faced with Immense expectations from families, teacher’s, and the rest of them all, to achieve top grades, secure better opportunities. Yes! Because it’s of no doubt, performance is usually ranked by grades in our modern educational sector.

2. The fear of standardization:

Now in our educational system, being standard in our educational performance has become very essential. Let’s take an example.

A student who struggles in school may feel ashamed and embarrassed by their poor grades. However, if they persevere and eventually succeed in their studies, they may come to view their educational journey as a source of strength and resilience. Similarly, the educational system as a whole can be seen as having a scarlet letter, with its share of failure and Challenges, but also the potential for positive change and progress.

3. Educational disparities:

Education should be every individual’s fundamental right that should be accessible to all, regardless of our race, ethnicity, national origin. We should all have access to the same educational opportunities as anyone else. However, the scarlet Letter of education also reveals inequality in access and resources for individuals. In most communities, students often lack adequate infrastructure, quality teachers, and educational materials.

Now, the question is, how can we bridge the gap between communities with inadequate educational infrastructure and those that have the access to these resources they need? All these require huge targeted efforts to be put together to make this goal a reality, such as investing in some rural and some underprivileged schools, providing scholarships and ensuring equal opportunities for all students.

Or should we talk about the most significant issues related to influence of technology, the uneven distribution of technology resources, such as devices, software, and internet connectivity. And these inequalities among ourselves can  lead to so many significant disparities in educational opportunities. Let’s take an example of those students who are from low-income families, they may not have access to the same education resources as those students from more affluent backgrounds.

4. The influence of technology:

In our modern world, Education is now a fundamental building block to we individuals of the society, and the role of education plays a crucial part in shaping our world. Is it how broad technology has become, to the extent of the way we access and share information with the use of the media, or how it has transformed the way we communicate to each other and collaborate with others . From the use of Google, researchers gate, researching online courses, MOOCS and so on.

The influence of technology has opened up new possibilities for us to connect with people and resources around the world, breaking down geographic barriers and expanding access to knowledge.

5. Teachers empowerment:

This in particular has become a critical aspect of education, teachers are to have the autonomy, necessary support, and resources they need to push on. Teachers need to feel empowered and respected in their profession, and when given that value needed, they are more likely to turn up for more classroom activities, teachers’ sense of empowerment still remains the key to the learner’s success.

When a teacher feels empowered, it triggers them to engage more with the learner’s.

Remember, “The Scarlet letter of education” explores the negative consequences of labelling and stigmatizing  students based on our academic performance. And to address this issue, we need to shift towards an exclusive and supportive educational approach that values every individual’s strength, and provides support.

It’s a harmful practice that must be addressed through an exclusive and supportive approach so it can be eradicated.

To sum it all up, we should all know that it’s an unempowering perspective that surrounds the educational process. There are many twists and turns surrounding our educational process, but the end is what stands beneficial. The Scarlet letter of education might be a widespread issue in our modern days educational sector that requires a comprehensive solution to it. But in most  cases, let’s try to embrace it.

Let’s celebrate and encourage ourselves, let’s foster a growth mindset, and let’s provide the personalised support that each student needs to thrive. Let’s make education work for everyone, regardless of  individual background, ability, or learning style. How do you think we can do all these? In the process  of embracing a more positive and supportive approach to education, we should consider a few specific strategies. First, we can rethink grading and assessment to focus on learning rather than performance. Second, we can provide more flexibility in how and when students learn, giving them the freedom to pursue their interests and passions. Third, we can focus on developing skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration, which are essential for success in the 21st century.
